This lead design came about after Danny Fairbrass observed it during the filming of Underwater Part Four. He wanted to create the most compact shape possible, so that the fish moves as little as possible before it feels the full weight of the lead.

The most compact shape is actually a sphere, but a lead in that shape is not very practical for carp fishing as it easily rolls and has a greater risk of causing tangles. Therefore, Danny made the sides square and gave the back of the lead a tapered shape to reduce the risk of the hooklink tangling around it – and thus the Square Pear lead was born.
