This is a truly classic hook pattern, and the Wide Gape has accounted for an enormous number of big carp catches over the many years since its initial launch. It's based on an older classic spade-end hook pattern from the 1980s and 90s that was very popular with many anglers – the Maruta Kinryu – but we've improved it and made it more user-friendly by replacing the spade end with an eye.

The Wide Gape features a slightly in-turned eye, short shank, heavily forged bend, and a very sharp, beaked point. It can be used with a variety of pop-up and bottom bait presentations, and once it takes hold, it tends to stay put. For those fishing in very snaggy environments in the UK, or when fishing abroad, a Wide Gape X version is also available. For truly extreme conditions abroad – including targeted fishing for enormous Siamese carp or Mekong catfish in Thailand – an even more heavy-duty Wide Gape XX version exists.
